Grandchild Privileges
I’ve been abusing my privileges as a grandchild lately, but only for my grandmother’s own good. I’ve been kind of worried about her health lately–she had a cold since Christmas that she’s been having a hard time shaking, even with a number of antibiotics, and about a month ago, she found out she’s going to need some eye surgery. Just last week, she found out she’s going to have to have her gallbladder out, and this past week, she was having trouble remembering my aunt’s name.
I called her yesterday and nagged her about watching her diet and taking an aspirin–hopefully it’ll do some good. Told her how we were studying the cardiovascular system, and how I was learning about cholesterol and fat and sodium levels, and asked her to try to cut some of the fat from her diet, as well as the salt. I realize this is like telling a terrier not to chase squirrels, or telling a parent not to worry about their children, but hopefully the “concerned med student grandson” approach will do some good. (Note: her cooking is, by far, the best I’ve ever had, and this is, of course, from the enormous amounts of salt and butter that she uses in her cooking. But seriously. Her mashed potatoes and green beans are, seriously, amazing. Don’t get me started on the cinnamon rolls or rolls, both made from scratch.) She’s been in great health for such a long time–mowing her own lawn at almost 80 years old–but it just seems too easy to quickly deteriorate when you’re that age. Here’s to your health, Nana.
