Autism Not Linked to Mercury
Sadly we apparently have to keep doing the studies, because parents who don’t understand science don’t believe it.

This is a medical weblog--a collection of thoughts about medicine, medical training, and health policy--written by a fifth-year medical student.
I recently stopped blogging, as I graduated from medical school and I'm now a physician in my residency training in New York City. But feel free to read and enjoy!
(To get rid of this thing, just wave your mouse over it. Ta da!
well, not wanting to talk out of school here or anything, but speaking as a parent with only limited understanding of science (other than the scientific method, and a general sense of how research studies are conducted), how are we supposed to make informed decisions? you point out that the state of california removed vaccines preserved with thimerosal based on the information from the prior study – is it your opinion that this was not a judicious course of action on their part?
don’t be so quick to judge all us parents as superstitious, doctor-fearing mugwort munchers. we are just like you – we have to make informed decisions based on a great deal of data that in many cases ends up being an educated guess combined with a bit of playing the odds. personally, my family pursues medical courses of action that are about 50% naturopathic and 50% allopathic, just to cover all the bases, and because we don’t happen to believe in the power of prayer.
i like my doctor because like you he’s a resident and instead of telling me “this is how it is” he says “well, this is what we know at this point.” as a result i actually trust him more than other doctors i’ve had.
