Match Day 2007
Congrats to everyone matching today, especially all of my classmates! (But most of us are sticking around and graduating next year in the 5-year plan.)
Isn’t my friend Laura’s mom the cutest?

This is a medical weblog--a collection of thoughts about medicine, medical training, and health policy--written by a fifth-year medical student.
I recently stopped blogging, as I graduated from medical school and I'm now a physician in my residency training in New York City. But feel free to read and enjoy!
(To get rid of this thing, just wave your mouse over it. Ta da!
I knew March 15th was a big day… couldn’t remember just why…
Congrats DOCTORS! The next step will be your toughest one (always seems like that), but it will be the most rewarding.
5 year plan??? Yikes. I’ve hardly managed 4.
It’s a relief to have match day over–and to know where I’m finally going.
What a difference a few decades make. On our “match day,” in 1959, we were only matched for an internship. We then had to apply for residencies after that. Of course the majority of graduates, since most med students were men, had to deal with military service. Those of us who were undecided as to what we wanted to do, went into the service for 2-3 years. Those who knew what residency they wanted, had applied for and been accepted into the Berry Plan, so they went directly into their chosen residency.
I am not sure that having to decide one’s future, as a junior in med school is the best plan. Had that been the custom back then, I probably would have applied for a pediatric residency and then later found out that I couldn’t tolerate that specialty. Going through a rotating internship allowed me to make an educated choice of a specialty that I really liked, i.e. orthopedic surgery.
I am certain that here is no going back to the old system but but reminiscing is often enjoyable.
