Desperately Needing an MD
It appears there’s no physician consultant to the show Desperate Housewives (yes, I watch it religiously, so what?). Taken from this week’s episode, not only is the chest x-ray totally whitened out, it’s also upside-down and backwards. For shame!
There you go again, paying attention to the details. You’re supposed to ogle the beautiful women, not the chest X-ray. Sheesh.
Graham, that was a very good observation. Having never watched the show I didn’t have the opportunity to pick it up myself. I have seen and heard many instances where a TV show or a program on NPR has been guilty of similar glaringly wrong mistakes, and it has been apparent that having a medical expert, on staff, is not considered important.
Either that, or it’s a seriously screwed up chest.
I always think these kinds of mistakes are hilarious.
You should see Grey’s Anatomy. That’s a show that supposedly has a medical consultant, yet seems to defy all logic consistently.
…that is the strangest looking chest X-ray I have ever seen. In addition to being upside down it looks like the things got 600 Watt bulbs behind it!
I’m with kanisha. For the record, it’s merely upside down, not backwards.
FWIW, a senior radiologist where I trained would routinely turn chest films upside down in order to change the perspective and help himself see things that he might otherwise miss.
Try it, it’s an amazing technique!

Flea
Perhaps all your patients have situs inversus or dextrocardia, Flea, but generally the heart goes on the left side, no?
lol – I saw the show a couple times down in Mexico, so it was all dubed over in Spanish and I only understood about 2/3 of it, but I must confess I couldn’t help but find it all horrible that THIS was the show everyone was getting addicted too.
I have completely given up TV now – there just seems to be a better way to spend your time… like reading a real person’s blog about their Med/Life experiances for example…Or figuring out how to corectly use the Ellipsis in one’s writing, maybe.
If you’ve ever seen the opening credits to Scrubs, you’ll see that the chest X-ray that’s posted is a patient with dextrocradia or more probably shown backwards.
But when you read the x-ray left is right and right is left… so you rotate that xray by 180 degrees you get a correct x-ray. Unless you’re going to flip it both horizontally and vertically which would be a funny way to do things…
Sorry Graham, Kate’s right, rotate the film 180 degrees. It’s upside down, meat!
Flea
Oh, you guys are right. My bad. I was thinking it was double flipped, which I guess is the same thing.
i get you Graham – It’s a mirror image upside-down, which seems upside-down and backwards. When you turn it 180 degrees, the heart ends up in the upper left corner, rather than the lower right corner (from the viewers vantage).
