Boards Mnemonics
A quick jaunt through the little catch phrases that are my life right now (thank you, First Aid). And hey, you might learn a thing or two:
- Bladder Cancer (Transitional Cell Carcinoma) in your Pee SAC: caused by Phenacetin, Smoking, Schistosomiasis (thanks Kat), Aniline Dyes, and Cyclophosphamide. Pee Sac is just such a great way to refer to your bladder. Also reminds me of Forat from Ali G referring to the scrotum as the “testes satchel.”
- Citric Acid Cycle. Cindy Is Kinky So She Fornicates More Often. Citrate, Isocitrate, alphaKetoglutarate, SuccinylCoA, Succinate, Fumarate, Malate, Oxaloacetate. Replace “Fornicates” with something else for added fun.
- Urea Cycle. Ordinarily, Careless Crappers Are Also Frivolous About Urination. Ornithine, Carbamoyl phosphate, Citrulline, Aspartate, Arginosuccinate, Fumarate, Arginine, Urea.
- Burkitt’s Lymphoma. BurC-Myc’s. (C-myc oncogene, 8:14 translocation.)
- Complications of Lung Cancer: SPHERE. Superior Vena Cava Syndrome, Pancoast’s Tumor, Horner’s Syndrome, Endocrine/paraneoplastic, Recurrent Laryngeal Nerve Palsy, Effusions (pleural, pulmonary).
- SLE-like syndrome caused by drugs: It’s not HIPP to have lupus. anti-Histone antibody, Hydralazine (vasodilator), INH (TB), Procainamide (Ia anti-arrhythmic), Phenytoin (anti-epileptic).
- Hypercalcemia is a MISHAP! Malignancy, Intox of Vitamin D, Sarcoidosis, Hyperparathyroidism, Alkali Syndrome, Paget’s Disease of Bone!
- Dilated/Congestive Cardiomyopathy Causes: ABCD. Alcohol, wet Beriberi, Coxsackie, Cocaine, Chagas’s, Doxorubicin.
- INH: Injures neurons and hepatocytes. Prevent neuron damage by giving Vitamin B6.
- Vincristine and vinblastine: prevent formation of microtubules, anti-cancer drugs. VinCristine Crushes Neurons, and VinBlastine Blasts Bone Marrow.
- Causes of Fibronous Pericarditis: UReMIa. Uremia, Rheumatic Fever, Myocardial Infarction.
- Kawasaki’s Disease, a vasculitis: Kids, Koronaries, Konjunctivitis, Krusty Lips, Strawberry Tongue.
- Buerger’s Disease, a vasculitis: Try the world RENOWNED Smokey Burger! (Buerger’s has Reynaud’s phenomenon, plus gangrene, in smokers.)
- Post-Strep Glomerulonephritis: Sub-Epi (STREPI) humps.
And hundreds more where that came from. But I’ll stop boring you now.
I always skipped the pnemonics, except for a few really dirty ones. I could never remember what acronym went with what disease, or even what most of the letters stood for. “S” could stand for SVC syndrome, syphillis, sandfly, or sh#thead. Ijust learned to get by by sleeping with all of my professors…;->
Hope studying is going well…almost over!
here’s a better one for hypercalcemia:
CHIMPANZEES
calcium excess (administration)
hyperparathyroidism
immobility / iatrogenic
metastasis / milk-alkali syndrome
paget’s disease
addison’s disease
neoplasms
excess vit D
excess vit A
sarcoidosis
enjoy (got loads of pneumonics too if you need to know some just email me)
Yes. Please. Stop.
Someone’s been reading “First Aid”.
My favorite mnonomic of all time is one for the cranial nerves:
Frank Sinatra Takes Four Fifths Seagram’s Seven Each Night To Ease Tension
This of course stands for: First Second Third Fourth Fifth Sixth Seventh Eighth Nineth Tenth Eleventh Twelfth.
Helpful no?
John
hey wanted to point out on your 1st mnemonic — make sure not to include schistosomiasis there, since it does not cause transitional cell carcinoma of the bladder! specifically it’s schistosoma haemabiotum (not mansoni or japonicum) that causes squamous cell carcinoma of the bladder. just thought you should know.
you can provide as many mnemonics as you find:) tho, i’m findind that i’m spending more time learning the mnemonics in first aid than I am learning what they are supposed to help me remember!:-P
good luck on the test!!:)
Did a random search for “Cindy is Kinky” to avoid having to type all the enzymes out, found your page.
Taking the boards in a week, (OMG OMG PANIIIIIIC!!!) so I know exactly what you’re feeling now. +/- a few brain cells.
What are you doing after the thing is over?
And I’m glad I’m not the only one who blogs to de-stress. =)
What is VITAMIN/S?
If you’re referring to VITAMIN C and D, it’s possible causes of disease:
Vascular
Inflammatory/Idiopathic
Trauma/Toxic
Autoimmune
Musculoskeletal/Metabolic
Infxn
Neoplasia
Congenital
