Condescension
I love it when doctors who have seen hundreds (thousands?) of a certain class of disease make pre-clinical students feel stupid and inadequate for not understanding every possible physiologic consequence of said disease. Great way to encourage learning and turn people on to the exciting world of your specialty.
I’d hate to see how they react to patients who ask questions, get confused, or don’t understand something.
That’s too bad they treat you like that; here at our school we are told everyday that this is only review from the third grade. I don’t know about your elementary education level, but mine neglected to teach me the histological difference between the anus and lip.
Sounds like Nate’s doctor on Six Feet Under who is so indifferent to him and treats him like he should know everything there is to know about AVM. I hope the character is an exaggeration and that there can’t possibly be some real docs as arrogant as that.
One must not forget one of the non-medical-interest incentives of becoming a doctor… Prestige.
And if a doctor hasn’t gotten the level of prestige he/she expected to get when he chose the career, students would seem like a wonderful opportunity to grab it by force! ;)
This isn’t medical profession unique though. Many managers at Burger King probably behave the same way.
The next time someone gets uppity, just imagine to yourself that person saying, “I’m a manager at Burger King!”
hehe.
