Sedaris on Surgical Conventions
Ever since my friend Ann told me about This American Life, an hourly show on NPR, I can’t get enough. Especially of David Sedaris’s readings. I present, for your listening pleasure, a few short pieces (only about 5 minutes long, and very funny). It starts at 37:20 (RealAudio file); the first is about the Orthopedic Surgeons Convention, and the other is, of course, about the largest turd in the world.
So, this hasn’t come up yet in our very slow e-mail conversations, but I TOTALLY love “This American Life” — generally, on my very suburban schedule, it’s one of the few convincing reasons to get up before, o, four in the afternoon on Saturdays.
And, lest I forget, at least my NPR station proceeds “This American Life,” with “Wait, Wait, Don’t Tell Me,” perhaps one of the looniest exercises in snobbery, pretension, and current events I’ve ever experienced (I secretly enjoy it. It validates all that time wasted reading The Times).
